W-000.28.111 [2021-03] Phosphate in Water, Reaction with the Molybdovanadate Reagent (Rapid Test)

Application/Purpose

The method describes how to determine the phosphate content of water photometrically with a cuvette test.

Scope of Application

Water intended for use as an ingredient in the production of beer (brewing liquor) or other foods

Phosphate ions are undesirable in drinking water and process water for use in the food industry since these ions suggest contamination with organic material. The phosphate content is paramount for both boiler and boiler feed water because accurately dosed phosphate additives prevent scale formation in boilers.

Principle

Phosphate ions form a yellow color in the presence of the molybdovanadate reagent. The color is determined using a photometer.
