R-300.04.110 [2016-03] α-Acids and β-Acids in Whole Hops and Hop Products – Spectrophotometric Method

Application/Purpose

Along with the lead conductance method and the HPLC determination of bitter substances, this spectrophotometric method is used predominantly in and for the American market. This method also enables an assessment of the aging of the sample (refer to the hop storage index in MEBAK R-300.12.110 Hop Storage Index (HSI) in Whole Hops and Hop Products).

Scope of Application

Hops and hop products intended for use in beer brewing or elsewhere in the food industry

Principle

After extraction with toluene, the α-acids and β-acids in the hops and hop pellets are determined using spectrophotometry.
